Very Disappointing

Pink Martini at the Beacon theater was a very disappointing experience. First, the Beacon theater staff. The show started at 8:15 pm, but the staff allowed latecomers to stroll in as late as 40 minutes into the performance. This created a constant obstruction of the view and an unpleasant distraction. Second, the theater itself. The Beacon theater is not the right venue for Pink Martini. It is not intimate enough and, because the seats are not raked, the stage is obstructed when patrons get up to dance. Third, the performance. It was littered with interruptions, some of which were too long (for example to advertise merchandise being sold in the lobby) which disrupted the flow. Fourth, Ari Shapiro. While Pink Martini’s singers are all exceptional, Ari Shapiro does not belong in that group. Simply put, he’s an average singer. His presence is unwarranted and a disservice to this spectacular band. I am a big fan of Pink Martini. But this evening was a C+ at best.
